Empty Properties - Winter Reminder

Published on Monday, 7 December 2020

We’ve had a few cold mornings in recent days and although snow has been forecast, it hasn’t yet settled. There have been a couple of mornings where we’ve all had to de-ice the car before the morning commute. It is therefore a good time to remind owners and occupiers of properties to ensure that they are taking all the necessary precautions in respect of empty properties or properties which are likely to be unoccupied due to either Christmas holiday / shutdowns or as a result of Covid restrictions. It is important to avoid frozen and burst pipes. This can be done by either switching off the water to a property and draining down all systems or alternatively ensure that heating is left on at a frost setting which ensures there is background heat on in a property. We also recommend that you check with your insurers if your property is going to be unattended for any length of time as most insurers have a Code of Practice for Unoccupied Premises which they will expect you to comply with.
